Math7th GradeFind probabilities of compound events using organized lists, sample space tables, tree diagrams, and simulation.

The Standard

Represent sample spaces for compound events using methods such as organized lists, sample space tables, and tree diagrams. For an event described in everyday language, identify the outcomes in the sample space which compose the event.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students represent compound-event sample spaces with organized lists, tables, or tree diagrams. They identify exactly which outcomes match an event described in everyday language.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student creates a complete, nonduplicated sample space for all stages. The student marks the outcomes satisfying a stated compound event and explains the match.

Common Misconceptions

Students may omit reversed outcomes when order matters or count duplicates when it does not. They may label branches incompletely and miss outcomes.

How to Assess It

Ask students to represent coin toss and number-cube outcomes in a table, then identify outcomes for heads and a number greater than 4.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a two-stage sample space with colored tiles, then transfer every outcome to a tree diagram.

  2. Ask students how a table or tree shows that the sample space is complete.

  3. Play Event Outcome Match with everyday descriptions and sample-space subsets.

  4. List all meal combinations from two entree choices and three side choices, then identify a stated event.
