What Students Need to Do
- Students write and solve one-variable inequalities from word problems with rational numbers. They graph the solution set on a number line and explain what the boundary and direction mean.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student solves an inequality shaped like px + q greater than, less than, or equal to r. The student uses the correct endpoint symbol and interprets allowable values in context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat an inequality as having one answer instead of a set of solutions. They may reverse the inequality incorrectly or graph an open endpoint when equality is allowed.
How to Assess It
- A student has $20 and saves $4 weekly toward at least $52. Ask for an inequality, its number-line graph, and the least whole number of weeks.
