The Standard
Understand addition of rational numbers; p + q is the number located a distance |q| from p, in the positive or negative direction depending on whether q is positive or negative. Show that a number and its opposite have a sum of 0 (are additive inverses). Interpret sums of rational numbers by describing real-world contexts.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students interpret p + q as moving a distance equal to the absolute value of q from p, with direction determined by q's sign. They show that opposites sum to zero and describe rational-number sums in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student represents -3 + 5 by starting at -3 and moving 5 units right to 2. The student also shows -4 + 4 = 0 and explains the opposite quantities in a context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may move according to the sign of the starting number instead of the addend. They may treat absolute value as a direction or assume adding always increases a value.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to model -2.5 + (-3) and 6 + (-6) on number lines. Have them explain each direction, distance, sum, and a matching context.
