What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students round decimals to a named place using place value. They identify the rounding digit, inspect the digit to its right, and write the nearest value.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student rounds 6.487 to 6.49 at the hundredths place and to 6.5 at the tenths place. The student explains which digit determined each result.

Common Misconceptions

Students may round every digit to the right or look at the wrong neighboring place. They may drop needed zeros that show the requested place.

How to Assess It

Ask students to round 14.365 to the nearest whole, tenth, and hundredth and explain the deciding digit each time.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place decimal cards on scaled number lines and locate the nearest benchmark for a named rounding place.

  2. Ask students why 3.95 rounds to 4.0 at the nearest tenth.

  3. Play rounding target by drawing a decimal and a place card, then defending the rounded value.

  4. Round measured distances or prices to a precision that fits a stated real-world purpose.
