What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use place value and nearby multiples to decide which ten or hundred is closest. They explain what happens when a number is exactly halfway between two choices.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student rounds 347 to 350 by comparing 347 with 340 and 350. The student rounds 347 to 300 when the target place is hundreds and explains both choices.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may round every digit or change digits to the left of the target place incorrectly. They may also treat a halfway value as rounding down.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to round 650 to the nearest hundred and 653 to the nearest ten, then justify each answer with nearby multiples.
