What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students round whole numbers through 1,000,000 to any specified place. They use place value and neighboring multiples to decide which benchmark is closer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student rounds 347,650 to 348,000 to the nearest thousand and to 300,000 to the nearest hundred thousand. The student identifies the two bounding multiples for each choice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may round every digit, change digits left of the target incorrectly, or use only a memorized rule. They may fail to replace digits right of the rounded place with zeros.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to round 682,450 to the nearest ten, thousand, and hundred thousand and justify one result with bounding multiples.

Place number cards on open number lines between neighboring multiples of the requested rounding place.
Ask students why the same number can round differently when the target place changes.
Play rounding target by drawing a number and place-value card, then naming both bounding multiples and the result.
