What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize volume as additive for solid figures composed of two nonoverlapping right rectangular prisms. They decompose the figure, find each volume, and add the parts in real-world problems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student splits a stepped solid into a 4-by-3-by-2 prism and a 2-by-3-by-2 prism. The student adds 24 and 12 to find 36 cubic units and marks the nonoverlapping parts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use one bounding prism that includes empty space or create overlapping parts. They may add edge lengths or omit one component volume.
How to Assess It
- Give students a dimensioned solid composed of two nonoverlapping rectangular prisms. Ask them to show a decomposition, calculate both volumes, and label the total in cubic units.
