What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find the volume of right rectangular prisms whose edge lengths include fractions. They multiply the three edge lengths and label the result in cubic units within a real-world or mathematical problem.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student calculates 1 1/2 × 2 × 3/4 as 2 1/4 cubic units. The student connects the product to the prism’s base area and height and explains what the volume means in context.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add the edge lengths, multiply fractions incorrectly, or report square units. They may also use an outside dimension that does not represent an interior edge of the prism.

How to Assess It

A storage box measures 1 1/2 feet by 2 feet by 3/4 foot inside. Ask students to find its volume and explain the cubic-foot unit.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a paper prism from a net labeled 1/2, 3/2, and 2 feet, then calculate its volume.

  2. Ask students why a prism with a fractional edge length can have a fractional number of cubic units.

  3. Match prism-dimension cards to volume cards, checking each product with a second fraction strategy.

  4. Compare the interior volumes of two fractional-dimension shipping boxes and choose which holds more packing material.
