What Mastery Looks Like

The student splits 14 into two groups of 7 and writes 14 = 7 + 7. The student recognizes that odd numbers cannot be written this way with whole-number addends.

Common Misconceptions

Students may split a number into any two addends instead of equal addends. They may write an equation whose two sides have different totals.

How to Assess It

Ask students to use counters to split 16 into equal groups and write a matching equation. Then ask whether 15 can be represented the same way.
