What Students Need to Do
- Students understand that the equal sign means both sides have the same value. They decide whether addition and subtraction equations in varied forms are true or false.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student recognizes 8 = 5 + 3 as true and 4 + 2 = 5 as false. The student compares both sides instead of treating the equal sign as an answer signal.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the equal sign means calculate what comes next. They may reject equations with one number on the left or operations on both sides.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to label 7 = 4 + 3, 5 + 2 = 4 + 4, and 9 - 2 = 3 + 4 as true or false and explain.
