What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students divide a rectangle into equal square units arranged in horizontal rows and vertical columns. They count every square to find how many cover the rectangle.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student draws a rectangle with 3 rows and 5 columns of same-size squares and counts 15 squares in all. The grid has no gaps, overlaps, or partial squares.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count grid lines or intersection points instead of square spaces. They may make uneven cells, count only the border squares, or confuse the number of rows with the total.
How to Assess It
- Ask the student to partition a rectangle into 4 rows and 3 columns of equal squares, then state and explain the total number of squares.
