The Standard

Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120. In this range, read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral.

What Students Need to Do: Students continue the counting sequence from different starting numbers and carry it through 120. They read numerals, write numerals they hear, and match a counted collection to its numeral.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student starts at 68 and counts accurately through 120, including each decade change. The student can write 107 when it is spoken and label a collection of 54 objects with the correct numeral.
Common Misconceptions: Students may restart at 1 instead of continuing from the given number or skip numbers after 99. They may reverse two-digit numerals, write 107 as 1007, or lose one-to-one counting in a collection.
How to Assess It: Ask the student to count from 94 to 112, write the numeral 107, and count a small collection before choosing its matching numeral card.

Lesson moves

Build bundled collections of craft sticks, count on from a chosen numeral card, and attach the matching written numeral.
Ask students to explain what changes in the written numerals when the count moves from 99 to 100.
Play number-sequence repair by giving partners a strip with missing, repeated, or reversed numerals to correct.
Count classroom supplies for an inventory list and write a numeral label for each collection.
