NY Next Generation Math AI-A.CED.3

MathGrades 9–12Create equations that describe numbers or relationships.

The Standard

Represent constraints by equations or inequalities, and by systems of equations and/or inequalities, and interpret solutions as viable or non-viable options in a modeling context.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students translate real constraints into equations, inequalities, or systems in Algebra I. They interpret the solution region and decide which mathematical solutions are workable in the situation.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student defines variables, represents every stated limit, and explains what the intersection of the constraints means. A proposed point is accepted or rejected using both mathematics and context.

Common Misconceptions

Students may model only one constraint, reverse an inequality, or include impossible values such as negative quantities. They may find a solution region without interpreting its boundary or feasible points.

How to Assess It

A club has $240 for shirts and posters, shirts cost $12, and posters cost $8, with at least 10 shirts. Ask for constraints and two viable purchase plans.

Lesson moves

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use budget and item cards to build constraint equations, then test purchase-plan cards against every limit.

  2. Ask students whether a boundary point is viable and require evidence from each constraint.

  3. Play feasible or not by checking coordinate cards against a system of contextual inequalities.

  4. Plan a school event under limits for cost, space, and attendance, then interpret the feasible region.
