Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students create one-variable Algebra II equations or inequalities from real contexts involving linear, quadratic, rational, or exponential relationships. The task is to build the model, not solve it.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student defines the variable, translates every quantity and relationship, and states reasonable restrictions. The resulting equation or inequality matches the context and selected function type.
Common Misconceptions: Students may solve when only a model is requested, omit a condition, or use a function family that does not fit the relationship. They may leave variables and units undefined.
How to Assess It: A medicine amount halves every 6 hours from 80 milligrams. Ask students to define time and write an equation for when the amount equals m, without solving.

Ask students which function family fits a context and require evidence from how quantities change.
Play model only by writing equations or inequalities while deliberately stopping before solution steps.
