What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students solve real-world and mathematical problems with systems of two linear equations in two variables and integer coefficients. Algebraic systems include an equation with at least one variable coefficient of 1.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student models 40 tickets totaling 260 dollars at prices of 8 and 5 dollars as a + s = 40 and 8a + 5s = 260. The student finds and interprets a = 20 and s = 20.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may define variables unclearly, pair coefficients with the wrong quantities, or write two equations for the same condition. They may find a numerical pair without checking whether it fits the context.
How to Assess It
- Present a context with two item types, a total item count, and a total cost using whole-dollar prices. Ask students to define variables, solve the system, and interpret and verify the result.

Ways to Teach It
Sort context details into two conditions, define two variables, and build a separate equation for each condition.
Ask students what each coefficient and constant represents before solving a contextual system.
Play model audit with system equations, context statements, proposed solutions, and substitution checks.
Determine two ticket counts, item quantities, or travel rates from paired total conditions.
