What Students Need to Do: Students adapt speech to varied contexts, purposes, tasks, and audiences. They demonstrate command of formal English when the situation requires it.
What Mastery Looks Like: The student adjusts register, organization, evidence explanation, tone, and delivery deliberately. The message remains accurate and effective across informal and formal settings.
Common Misconceptions: Students may equate formality with complexity or stiffness. They may change vocabulary while ignoring audience knowledge, purpose, or interaction expectations.
How to Assess It: Assign one claim and two contexts, a peer workshop and a formal hearing. Ask students to deliver adapted versions and justify key choices.
