What Students Need to Do
- Students trace and evaluate an argument and its claims. They assess reasoning, relevance, and sufficiency of evidence and recognize irrelevant evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student maps the argument’s progression and evaluates each major support. The student explains whether the evidence is enough and identifies irrelevant material precisely.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call reasoning valid because they agree with the conclusion. They may count evidence pieces without considering quality, relevance, or sufficiency.
How to Assess It
- Give a short argument containing one strong reason, one weak reason, and one irrelevant detail. Ask students to evaluate each and judge overall support.
