What Students Need to Do: Students create a poem, story, play, artwork, or another response to a text, theme, author, or personal experience. They choose details and features that make the connection clear.
What Mastery Looks Like: A strong response shows a clear connection to the source, theme, or experience. The student uses the chosen form purposefully rather than merely summarizing.
Common Misconceptions: Students may retell the source without creating a response or add decorative features that have no clear connection. They may choose a form but ignore its basic features.
How to Assess It: Read a short passage and ask students to create a brief poem, scene, or sketch that responds to its theme. Have them label the connecting detail.
