What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students create a poem, story, play, artwork, or another response to a text, theme, author, or personal experience. When they change a source, they explain the reason for the change.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A strong response connects clearly to its source or experience and uses the chosen form effectively. Any meaningful change from the source is identified and explained.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may retell the source without creating a response or add decorative features that have no clear connection. They may choose a form but ignore its basic features.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short scene and ask them to recast it as a poem, comic, or monologue. Have them explain one choice that differs from the scene.

Ways to Teach It
Arrange text details on cards, then build a poem, scene, or artwork around one selected detail.
Ask students which response form best fits the source and require one reason tied to meaning.
Use a response-form spinner and give students five minutes to draft a connected opening.
Create a response to a school event for a hallway display, class reading, or student performance.
