What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find words that name or suggest feelings and sensory experiences. They connect each word to what a character feels or what a reader can imagine sensing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student points to a word such as whispered, icy, or fragrant and names the feeling or sense it evokes. The explanation fits the sentence and picture.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name their own feeling without locating a word in the text. They may label every describing word as a feeling word and ignore sensory meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give students three sentences with one feeling or sensory word in each. Ask them to underline each word and name the feeling or sense.

Sort word cards into feeling, sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch groups.
Ask students what they picture or feel when an author uses the word trembling.
