What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how each leader sought greater opportunity and equality for Black Americans during the New South Era. They compare Washington's vocational approach, Du Bois's demand for immediate civil rights, and Herndon's business leadership.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can connect Washington to Tuskegee Institute and the Atlanta Compromise, Du Bois to direct protest and the NAACP, and Herndon to Atlanta Life Insurance. The student can explain how their strategies differed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat Washington and Du Bois as having the same strategy. They may mistake Herndon for a political officeholder rather than a businessman who created jobs, wealth, and services. They may also assume progress ended segregation quickly.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Create three labeled boxes, write one action each leader took, then explain one difference between Washington and Du Bois.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups source cards with quotes, photographs, and achievements, then have them sort the cards under Washington, Du Bois, or Herndon.
Ask students to write: Which strategy created the strongest path toward equality in the New South, and what evidence supports your claim?
