What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect each mayor’s decisions to Atlanta’s growth in transportation, business, civil rights, and professional sports. They explain how that growth affected Georgia’s economy and public image.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly link Hartsfield to airport expansion, annexation, and racial moderation. They link Allen to desegregation, Atlanta Stadium, and professional sports, then explain statewide effects.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the two mayors’ actions or treat them as state leaders. They may assume Atlanta’s growth benefited every Georgian equally. They may also credit the mayors alone for civil rights progress.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to draw two cause-and-effect chains, one for each mayor. Each chain must name one action and one economic or social effect on Georgia.
