What Students Need to Do: Students explain why the United States became involved in the region, including oil routes, alliances, security threats, terrorism, and weapons concerns. They sequence three conflicts and connect each one to its causes and results.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students explain why a U.S.-led coalition expelled Iraqi forces from Kuwait in 1991. They connect the 2001 Afghanistan invasion to the September 11 attacks and the 2003 Iraq invasion to weapons claims and regime change. They describe outcomes such as long wars, new governments, instability, and continued U.S. involvement.
Common Misconceptions: Students often merge the 1991 Gulf War with the 2003 Iraq invasion, or place Afghanistan after Iraq. Some think Iraq carried out September 11, or that weapons of mass destruction stockpiles were found there. They may also treat oil as the only U.S. interest.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Complete a three-row chart for the Gulf War, Afghanistan, and Iraq with the year, main trigger, U.S. goal, and one outcome.

Lesson moves

In pairs, arrange dated event cards for Kuwait, September 11, Afghanistan, and Iraq, then connect each action to a stated U.S. goal.
Write one paragraph answering: Did the United States pursue the same goal in all three conflicts? Cite three event cards.
Play a three-column sorting game, placing cause, action, and outcome cards under the Gulf War, Afghanistan, or Iraq.
