What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the origins, sacred texts, key beliefs, worship practices, and important places linked to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. They explain what the three religions share and where their beliefs and practices differ.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can organize accurate facts in a three-circle Venn diagram and explain at least two similarities and two differences. The student uses terms such as Torah, Bible, Qur'an, synagogue, church, and mosque correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume all Arabs are Muslim or all Muslims are Arab. They may overlook Christianity's origins in Southwest Asia or treat Judaism only as a religion, not also as a cultural identity.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank three-circle Venn diagram. Ask them to add one trait shared by all three religions, one trait unique to each, and one pairwise similarity.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups cards naming beliefs, texts, founders, places, and practices, then have them sort the cards into a three-circle Venn diagram.
Ask students to write: How can three religions share historical roots but develop different beliefs and practices?
Play a clue game where teams identify the religion, or religions, connected to each sacred text, worship place, holiday, or historical figure.
Use a current calendar to locate Jewish, Christian, and Muslim observances, then discuss how religious practices affect school, work, food, and travel.
