What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify Christianity, Islam, and traditional African religions in specific communities. They explain that people in the same ethnic group may practice different religions. They keep ethnic identity and religious identity separate.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use a map, chart, or short source to name multiple religions found within an ethnic group. The student avoids broad claims and supports conclusions with evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat Africa as one country or assume each ethnic group shares one religion. They may describe northern Africa as entirely Muslim and sub-Saharan Africa as entirely Christian. Some think traditional African religions form one single faith or are no longer practiced.
How to Assess It
- Give students six fictional Yoruba family profiles marked Christian, Muslim, or traditional religion. Ask them to explain the relationship between ethnicity and religion in two sentences, citing two profiles.

Ways to Teach It
Use colored counters to plot Yoruba profile cards marked Christian, Muslim, or traditional religion, then record what the mixed pattern shows.
Write a response to: Why can two members of the same ethnic group practice different religions? Cite one class source.
Play a claim-check game with cards such as "All North Africans are Muslim," correcting each false claim with precise evidence.
Compare Nigeria's public holiday calendar for Eid and Christmas, then explain how national life reflects more than one religious tradition.
