What Students Need to Do: Students identify the shared traits that can connect people through ancestry and culture, such as language, history, and traditions. They distinguish those ties from shared religious beliefs and practices.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly classify examples and explain their reasoning using specific evidence. They also recognize that one person can belong to both an ethnic group and a religious group.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume everyone in an ethnic group follows the same religion. They may also confuse nationality, race, ethnicity, and religion or treat each label as mutually exclusive.
How to Assess It: Give students this exit ticket: “Is Hausa an ethnic identity, a religious identity, or both? Explain using one defining trait.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs identity cards listing language, ancestry, traditions, and beliefs, then have them sort the cards by the type of shared connection.
Ask students to write three sentences explaining how two people can share a religion but belong to different ethnic groups.
Play a classification relay using cards labeled Yoruba, Islam, Amhara, and Christianity, with teams placing and defending each choice.
Have students examine a short African census table and identify which categories describe ethnicity, religion, nationality, or language.
