Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students identify major European language groups, including Germanic, Romance, and Slavic, and locate examples on a map. They explain that national borders and language boundaries do not always match.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can classify common languages such as Spanish, German, and Polish by language group. They can give examples of multilingual countries and explain why nearby countries may share languages.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every European country has one unique language or that everyone speaks English as a first language. They may also assume all European languages belong to the three largest language groups.
How to Assess It: Give students a Europe language map and ask them to name two language groups, list one language from each, and identify one multilingual country.

Lesson moves

Give pairs language cards and a Europe map, then have them sort each card by family and place it near a country.
Ask students why one European country might use several languages, then require two examples from a map or class source.
Run a language-family relay where teams match language cards, such as French, German, and Polish, to Romance, Germanic, or Slavic.
Show multilingual train signs from Belgium or Switzerland and have students infer how travelers and public agencies handle several languages.
