What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain why abolitionists sought to end slavery and why suffragists sought voting rights for women. They identify key leaders, methods, and links between the movements.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students connect leaders such as Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony to their work. They compare each movement’s goals and methods using accurate examples.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think suffrage means suffering or that abolition and suffrage were the same movement. They may assume ending slavery or gaining voting rights immediately ended discrimination.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Name one goal and one method for each movement, then write one way the movements were connected.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have pairs sort leader, goal, speech, petition, and convention cards into abolition, suffrage, or both.

  2. Write four sentences answering: How did speeches, newspapers, petitions, and conventions help people challenge unfair laws?

  3. Run a matching relay where teams connect leaders with quotations, actions, and movement goals.

  4. Show a current voter registration flyer, then ask students how its message connects to the long fight for voting access.
