What Students Need to Do

Students identify why the Articles of Confederation caused problems and explain the disagreements delegates faced. They describe how compromises addressed representation, government power, and slavery.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can name a disagreement, describe each side, and explain the compromise that followed. They can also identify who benefited and what remained unresolved.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the delegates agreed on every issue or that the Constitution immediately ended slavery. They may also confuse the Great Compromise with the Three-Fifths Compromise.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Choose one debate from the Constitutional Convention. In three sentences, explain the two viewpoints, the compromise, and one result.

   Give groups state population cards and ask them to design a fair Congress, then compare their plans with the Great Compromise.

   Ask students to write which convention disagreement was hardest to solve and support their choice with two facts.

   Create matching cards for each challenge, opposing viewpoints, and compromise, then have pairs race to form accurate sets.

   Compare equal Senate representation with population-based House representation using the populations of Georgia counties.
