Georgia 8.PAR.3.3
The Standard
Create and solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable within a relevant application.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Create and interpret expressions within relevant situations. Create, interpret, and solve linear equations and linear inequalities in one variable to model and explain real phenomena.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students represent a situation with a one-variable equation or inequality. They solve it, check the result, and explain what the answer means in context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a variable, build the correct equation or inequality, and solve it accurately. They check the result and explain what the solution means, including any limits on reasonable values.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may translate “no more than” as greater than instead of less than or equal to. They may forget to reverse an inequality sign when multiplying or dividing by a negative number. Some give a number without checking whether it makes sense in the situation.
How to Assess It
- A bike rental costs $6 plus $4 per hour. Write and solve an equation for a $30 total, then an inequality for spending no more than $30.

Ways to Teach It
Use cups and counters on a balance mat to model 3x + 5 = 20, then remove equal amounts from both sides.
Explain in writing how “at least,” “no more than,” and “exactly” change the mathematical statement for the same situation.
Sort situation cards with matching equations, inequalities, solutions, and graphs, then justify each completed set to a partner.
Plan movie tickets and snacks with a fixed budget, write an inequality, and determine the greatest number of tickets possible.
