Georgia 8.FGR.7.1
The Standard
Interpret and solve relevant mathematical problems leading to two linear equations in two variables.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Justify and use various strategies to solve systems of linear equations to model and explain realistic phenomena.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a situation into two linear equations with two variables. They solve the system using graphing, substitution, or elimination, then explain what the solution means in the situation.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students define two variables, write two correct linear equations, and choose a workable solution method. They find the ordered pair, check it in both equations, and explain its meaning using units and context.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat each equation as a separate problem instead of finding one pair that satisfies both. They may mix up fixed fees and per-unit rates, or report an intersection without explaining what each coordinate means.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Plan A costs $20 plus $5 per visit. Plan B costs $8 plus $7 per visit. When do they cost the same?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two colors of counters to model adult and student tickets, then write and solve equations from total sales and revenue.
Ask students to compare graphing, substitution, and elimination for one system, then write which method is most efficient and why.
Play System Match by having students pair context cards, equation cards, graph cards, and solution cards.
Compare two phone plans with monthly fees and data charges, then find and explain the usage where their costs are equal.
