Georgia 7.NR.1.1

Math7th GradeNumerical Reasoning

The Standard

Show that a number and its opposite have a sum of 0 (are additive inverses). Describe situations in which opposite quantities combine to make 0.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students pair positive and negative values that have the same absolute value. They use equations, number lines, and real situations to explain how the pair cancels.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given 8, a student names −8 and writes 8 + (−8) = 0. The student can model the cancellation and explain it using a situation such as depositing and withdrawing $8.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the opposite of a negative number is always negative, or confuse an opposite with a reciprocal. Some add absolute values and write 8 + (−8) = 16, or think zero has a different opposite.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: For −12, name its opposite, show both on a number line, write an equation, and describe a matching real-world situation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs of red and blue integer chips; students match equal counts, remove zero pairs, and record each equation.

  2. Prompt: How can owing $15 and receiving $15 leave no change? Explain with words, an equation, and a number line.

  3. Play Opposite Match with cards from −20 to 20; students collect canceling pairs and earn a point by stating each equation.

  4. Use a temperature log where rises and drops of equal size return the thermometer to its starting temperature.
