Georgia 6.PAR.7.2
The Standard
Write one-step equations and inequalities to represent and solve problems; explain that a variable can represent an unknown number or any number in a specified set.
Georgia's K-12 Mathematics Standards · Write and solve one-step equations and inequalities as mathematical models to explain authentic, realistic situations.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write a one-step equation or inequality from a realistic situation, then solve it using an inverse operation. They explain whether the variable stands for one unknown value or any value that meets a condition.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students translate a situation into a one-step equation or inequality and solve it correctly. They explain whether the variable has one unknown value or can be any value in a solution set. They check that the answer makes sense in the situation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an equation when words such as “at most” or “at least” call for an inequality. They may use the wrong inverse operation or treat every variable as one fixed unknown. They may also include solutions that do not make sense in context, such as part of a person.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Notebooks cost $4 each, and a class can spend at most $60. Write and solve an inequality, explain what the variable represents, and list three possible solutions.”

Ways to Teach It
Place one covered cup and five counters on a balance mat to model x + 5 = 12, then remove five from both sides.
Compare x + 4 = 12 and x + 4 ≤ 12, then write what x means and how the solution sets differ.
In pairs, draw scenario cards and earn a point for writing the model, solving it, and stating the answer in context.
Plan a class snack purchase with a $40 limit, fixed item prices, and an inequality showing how many items can be bought.
