What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare the value of the same digit when it appears in neighboring places. They explain the relationship using words, place-value models, multiplication, and division.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify the value of repeated digits in whole numbers and decimals. They explain each relationship with multiplication or division by 10 and support it with an equation or place-value model.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a digit keeps the same value wherever it appears. They may reverse the relationship, saying a place to the right is 10 times greater instead of one tenth as great.

How to Assess It

Give students 6.66 and ask, “How does the value of each 6 compare with the 6 to its right?” Require equations and words.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build numbers with place-value disks, then move one disk left or right and record how its value changes.

  2. Ask students to explain why the two 4s in 44.4 have different values, using words and equations.

  3. Play a card game where students place the same digit in two columns, then state the value relationship to earn a point.

  4. Compare prices such as $5.50 and $0.55, and have students explain how the value of each 5 changes by place.
