The Standard
Explain that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.

What Students Need to Do
- Students compare the value of the same digit when it appears in neighboring places. They explain the relationship using words, place-value models, multiplication, and division.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify the value of repeated digits in whole numbers and decimals. They explain each relationship with multiplication or division by 10 and support it with an equation or place-value model.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a digit keeps the same value wherever it appears. They may reverse the relationship, saying a place to the right is 10 times greater instead of one tenth as great.
How to Assess It
- Give students 6.66 and ask, “How does the value of each 6 compare with the 6 to its right?” Require equations and words.
