Expectations in This Standard
1.PAR.3 is a Georgia mathematics standard. These are the expectations under it.
- 1.PAR.3.1
Investigate, create, and make predictions about repeating patterns with a core of up to 3 elements resulting from repeating an operation, as a series of shapes,...
- 1.PAR.3.2
Identify, describe, and create growing, shrinking, and repeating patterns based on the repeated addition or subtraction of 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize repeating, growing, and shrinking patterns in objects, pictures, and familiar settings. They describe the rule, continue the pattern, and make a new example.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students find the repeating unit or tell how a pattern changes from step to step. They extend patterns correctly and create their own pattern that follows a clear rule.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name the colors they see without finding the smallest part that repeats. They may add or remove different amounts each time and still call it a growing or shrinking pattern.
How to Assess It
- Show 2, 4, 6, __ objects and 7, 6, 5, __ objects. Have students fill each blank, explain the change, and draw one repeating pattern.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs colored cubes to build, extend, and trade repeating, growing, and shrinking patterns for a partner to solve.
Show three picture patterns and ask, "What repeats or changes, and what should come next?"
Play Pattern Match by pairing rule cards, such as add two, with picture cards that follow each rule.
Photograph patterns on floor tiles, shelves, or fences, then have students label each as repeating, growing, or shrinking.
