What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose from simple strategies to understand books and create their own texts. They use pictures, rereading, questions, drawing, labels, and sound spelling when those tools help.

What Mastery Looks Like

When meaning is unclear, the student looks at the picture, rereads, or asks a question. When creating a text, the student uses drawing, labels, sound spelling, and rereading to make the message clear.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think reading means guessing from pictures without checking whether the words and story make sense. They may think writing requires correct spelling, so they avoid adding labels or sentences.

How to Assess It

Show a picture-book page and ask, “What is happening, and what helped you know?” Then have students draw and label what might happen next.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Read a picture book aloud, then have children order picture cards and retell the story using the cards.

  2. Ask, “What can you do when a page is confusing?” Chart responses, then let students draw one strategy.

  3. Play Strategy Match: name a reading or writing problem, and students hold up the tool card they would use.

  4. Have students make a classroom sign using a picture, labels, and sound spelling so classmates can understand the message.
