What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose reading and writing strategies that match a text, task, audience, and purpose. They monitor whether an approach works, switch when needed, and explain their decisions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can select a useful approach for an unfamiliar text, make a supported interpretation, and adjust when confused. They can plan, draft, and revise for a specific audience and purpose, then explain their choices.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think highlighting every line counts as close reading. They may use one strategy for every text, treat revision as proofreading, or keep using an approach that is not helping.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Read a 200-word editorial, annotate it with one chosen strategy, and write a three-sentence response. Name the strategy and explain why it fit.

Ways to Teach It
In pairs, sort strategy cards into reading and writing stages, then use two cards while marking and revising a short editorial.
Write about a difficult reading or writing task, naming the strategy you tried, what changed, and what you would try next.
Run a strategy switch relay where teams solve short reading and revision problems by selecting, applying, and defending a different strategy each round.
Compare a college application essay, workplace email, and news article, then choose suitable reading and writing strategies for each situation.
