What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose from several reading and writing strategies based on the text, purpose, and difficulty. They apply a strategy, judge whether it helped, and try another when needed.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can approach an unfamiliar text or writing task and select a useful strategy without being told which one to use. They can explain their choice, check whether it worked, and switch strategies when needed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use the same strategy for every task, such as highlighting everything or always making an outline. They may name a strategy without showing how it improved understanding or writing.

How to Assess It

Give students a short paragraph and a brief writing prompt. Ask them to choose one reading strategy and one writing strategy, use each, and explain why each fit the task.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs cards labeled reread, annotate, summarize, brainstorm, outline, draft, and revise, then have them sort cards by when each helps.

  2. Ask students to describe a time a reading or writing strategy failed, then explain what they would try instead.

  3. Run a strategy match game where teams pair reading and writing problems with a useful response and defend each match.

  4. Have students analyze a confusing school announcement, choose a reading strategy to interpret it, then rewrite it clearly for classmates.
