What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students break familiar words into sounds, syllables, letters, or meaningful parts. They blend those parts to build words and connect each word to a meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can break sun into /s/, /u/, and /n/, then blend the sounds to read the word. They can build familiar words and explain what each word means.

Common Misconceptions

Students may say letter names instead of the sounds they represent. They may omit sounds, reverse letters, or guess a word from its picture or first letter.

How to Assess It

Give each student the letter tiles s, u, and n. Ask the student to build sun, say each sound, blend the word, and match it to a picture.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students letter tiles to build map, then change one tile to make mop and discuss how the word and picture change.

  2. Show cat and cats, then ask students to explain what changed and draw a picture for each word.

  3. Play Word Builder Bingo by calling three sounds for students to blend, build with tiles, and cover on their boards.

  4. Have students find classroom labels, clap each word's syllables, and match each label to the correct object.
