What Students Need to Do

Students use word parts, sentence clues, and reference tools to work out unfamiliar words. They apply those words accurately in discussion and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students break an unfamiliar word into meaningful parts and check the meaning against the sentence. They use the word correctly when speaking or writing and can choose a more precise word when revising.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every beginning or ending as an affix, such as reading the re in real as a prefix. They may also choose a familiar meaning that does not fit the sentence.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: In “Maya cautiously reopened the damaged package,” students mark useful word parts and context clues, then explain cautiously and reopened. Have them use one word in a new sentence.

   Give pairs root, prefix, and suffix cards to combine into words, then have them define each word and verify it in a dictionary.

   Ask students to explain how the meaning changes across act, react, action, and inactive, using each word in a sentence.

   Play Word Part Relay, where teams build a word from called affixes and roots, define it, and earn a point for accurate use.

   Collect words from menus, signs, packages, and directions, then have students mark word parts and explain how each word communicates precise information.
