What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to a spoken sentence and separate it into individual words. They recognize that words are put together in order to make a sentence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a short spoken sentence, a student repeats it and taps once for each word. The student can count the words and name the first and last words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count syllables or sounds instead of whole words. They may also skip short words such as “a,” “the,” or “is.”
How to Assess It
- Say, “The dog can run.” Ask each student to repeat it, place one counter per word, count the words, and name the first word.

Ways to Teach It
Say “Three birds fly,” and have students move one cube into a row for each word they hear.
Ask, “How is one word different from a sentence?” Have partners give one example of each.
Play sentence hopscotch by saying a sentence and having students jump once for each word.
Give a classroom direction, such as “Put away your crayons,” then count its words together.
