What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students listen to a short spoken phrase or sentence and separate it into individual words. They show each word with a tap, step, finger, or counter.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a sentence of three to six words, the student repeats it and moves one token for each word. The student counts small words and does not split longer words into syllables.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may clap for syllables or individual sounds instead of whole words. They often skip small words such as a, is, or the, or combine two words into one.
How to Assess It
- Say, “The little dog can jump.” Ask the student to repeat it, move one cube for each word, and tell how many words they heard.

Ways to Teach It
Give each child six counters, say short sentences, and have students slide one counter forward for every word they hear.
Ask, “How can we prove that ‘I see a cat’ has four words?” and let students explain with fingers or counters.
Play Word Hop by saying a sentence and having students take one floor-tile step for each word they hear.
During morning message, read a familiar classroom direction and have students tap once for each word before following it.
