What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify and name uppercase and lowercase letters. They match letter pairs and recognize letters when they appear outside alphabetical order.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student names all uppercase and lowercase letters when shown in random order. The student matches uppercase letters with lowercase partners and distinguishes letters from numbers and symbols.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may rely on the alphabet song and struggle when letters appear out of order. They often confuse similar forms such as b and d or mismatch uppercase and lowercase partners.
How to Assess It
- Show six mixed uppercase and lowercase letter cards. Ask each student to name every letter and match the three uppercase and lowercase pairs.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs of uppercase and lowercase letter cards; students sort by case, then match each uppercase letter to its lowercase partner.
Show M, m, N, and n, then ask, “How can you tell these letters apart?” and record students’ observations.
Play alphabet bingo by calling letter names while students cover matching uppercase or lowercase letters on their boards.
Use food packages or classroom labels for a letter hunt, asking students to find and name five printed letters.
