What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students say the letter names from A through Z in the correct sequence. They remember which letter comes next and avoid skips or repeats.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name all 26 letters in the correct sequence. The student keeps a steady pace and fixes an error when prompted to try again.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may skip or blur letters in the L through P section. Some repeat letters, reverse nearby letters, or give letter sounds instead of letter names.
How to Assess It
- Ask each student, “Tell me the alphabet from the beginning to the end.” Mark skipped, repeated, or misplaced letters on a checklist.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs mixed letter cards to arrange from A to Z, then have them touch and name each letter.
Ask partners, “Which letters come before and after M?” Repeat with several target letters.
Have students pass a beanbag around a circle, with each child saying the next letter in the sequence.
Show alphabetized library bins, then ask students to predict which bin comes after M and before O.
