What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine how imagery, figurative language, repetition, sound, rhythm, and line breaks shape a poem's meaning and effect. They use selected techniques in their own writing to create a specific response.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can point to exact words, sounds, or line choices and explain the effect each creates. They can revise their own poem by choosing techniques that fit a clear audience and purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat rhyme as the main feature of poetry or add figurative language without a clear reason. They may identify a technique correctly but explain only what it is, not how it affects meaning, tone, or readers.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short plain sentence and ask them to rewrite it using two poetic techniques. They must name each technique and explain its intended effect in one sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a poem cut into phrase strips, then have them arrange line breaks and compare how each version changes pace and emphasis.
Ask students to explain which technique best creates tension, humor, grief, or hope, using one quoted example from a poem.
Play technique match: students pair imagery, repetition, metaphor, alliteration, and enjambment cards with sample lines and defend each match.
Compare a song lyric and an advertisement, then identify how repetition or figurative language helps each influence its audience.
