What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose language techniques that fit a specific purpose and audience. They use those choices to create effects such as humor, urgency, trust, emotion, or emphasis.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can write for a clear audience and purpose using well-chosen techniques. They can name the effect they intended and revise language when the effect is unclear or inappropriate.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add metaphors or repetition just to make writing sound fancy. They may mismatch the technique and audience, overuse emotional appeals, or create mixed metaphors.
How to Assess It
- Give students a purpose and audience, such as persuading ninth graders to join a club. Ask for four sentences using two named techniques, with a note explaining each intended effect.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sentence strips with plain claims, then have them add imagery, repetition, analogy, or appeals for assigned audiences.
Ask students to write two versions of one message, one for classmates and one for the principal, then explain their choices.
Play Technique Match, where teams pair short passages with the device, intended effect, audience, and purpose that fit best.
Compare two real advertisements for the same product, then rewrite one appeal for a different age group or setting.
