What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students develop a focused research question, gather information from several credible sources, and combine relevant ideas into a clear answer. They explain how sources agree, differ, or add context.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student selects trustworthy sources, paraphrases accurately, and organizes evidence by idea rather than by source. The final answer draws a supported conclusion and cites each source.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list one source at a time instead of connecting ideas across sources. They may trust the first search result, confuse synthesis with summary, or copy wording without citation.

How to Assess It

Give students three short source excerpts with publication details about school start times. Ask them to choose two credible sources and answer, “Should high schools start later?” in three connected sentences.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups printed source cards on teen sleep, then have them sort claims, evidence, source credentials, and connections on chart paper.

  2. Have students write and discuss how a researcher should respond when two credible sources disagree, using two sample excerpts.

  3. Run a synthesis match game where pairs connect evidence cards from different sources to shared claims and explain each match.

  4. Students research a school concern, such as cafeteria waste, and send the principal a cited recommendation based on three credible sources.
