What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students gather relevant information from several trustworthy sources to answer a focused question. They combine ideas, note agreements or conflicts, and attribute evidence clearly.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select trustworthy, relevant evidence from different source types. They connect agreements, differences, and gaps to form a clear answer with accurate attribution.

Common Misconceptions

Students often write separate source summaries instead of connecting ideas across texts. They may trust the first search result, overlook conflicts, or copy wording too closely.

How to Assess It

Give students three short source excerpts and a research question. Ask for a four-sentence answer that connects two sources and explains one agreement or conflict.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups six source cards; students sort them by credibility, then arrange evidence from three cards into one claim map.

  2. Ask students to write: Where do two sources agree, where do they differ, and which evidence best answers our question?

  3. Run a synthesis relay where teams add one sourced idea, connection, or qualification to a shared answer without repeating earlier points.

  4. Have students research a college, career, or local issue and produce a brief recommendation supported by government, expert, and firsthand sources.
