What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students reread a draft and use their own review or feedback from others to judge how well it works. They identify specific strengths and problems, then choose revisions tied to their purpose and goals.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can state their purpose and writing goals clearly. They can point to choices that help or hinder those goals, weigh feedback, and make targeted revisions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think evaluation means fixing spelling and punctuation only. They may accept every suggestion or reject feedback without checking it against their purpose. Some rely on personal preference instead of evidence from the draft.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: State your writing goal, identify one sentence that supports it, and name one revision that would improve the draft.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a printed draft, highlighters, and sticky notes to mark one effective choice, one mismatch, and one revision.
Ask students to write: What is my purpose, and which sentence best achieves it? Then explain their choice to a partner.
Run Feedback Triads: writers read a goal card, peers offer one goal-linked comment, and writers choose a revision.
Compare two school announcement drafts, then decide which better persuades students to attend an event and cite two specific choices.
