What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect what they already know to ideas and evidence in a text. They compare the two, notice conflicts or missing information, and update their understanding when needed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify relevant background knowledge before and during reading. They explain whether the text confirms, adds to, or challenges that knowledge. They notice gaps and name what they need to investigate.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat opinions, memories, or assumptions as reliable background knowledge. They may ignore contradictions or connect the text to facts that are unrelated. Some add new information without revising an earlier belief.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short article and ask: What did you already know, what did you learn, and what belief changed or needs checking? Require one cited sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sticky notes to label a short article: knew, new, conflicts, or missing, then place notes beside matching passages.
After reading, students answer: What belief did the text confirm, challenge, or complicate, and which sentence caused the change?
Play Evidence Sort: teams match prior-knowledge claims with text evidence, then discard matches that rely only on assumption.
Compare a health claim from social media with a reliable article, listing what changed and what still needs checking.
